The Fullerton clinics are some of our favorite clinics, so it was no surprise that this clinic had a great start. It was unique because it was the first clinic our brand new 3rd years could begin doing clinical work. To celebrate I placed two operators on each chair, having them switch off treating patients. They really stepped up to the task and ran with it. They kept up enough speed to keep the clinic running smoothly and we saw some high quality work come out that day. One example was Bethany's amalgam build up on #19. A girl came in with a endodontically treated tooth that had an IRM filling that was quickly wearing away, showing that the mesial half of the tooth was missing. With no dental insurance the girl was not returning to her dentist to compete treatment and receive a crown. Bethany provided the girl with a beautiful occulsal mesial build up that was a great second option. As for the rest of the clinic, our station supervisors kept everyone in their station on track. We gave a lot of 2nd years the opportunity to diagnose patients in screening with the assistance of 3rd and 4th years, and gave the rest of the 3rd years an opportunity to anesthetize patients in anesthesia. . We are still grateful to Chuck Sargent for showing up at all our clinics and allowing us to use his radiograph equipment to make radiology run smoother and faster. The only hold up at clinic this month was the lack of universal charting in screening. We need to educate out volunteers on how we record information gained in screening so it is always clear to those in subsequent stations what treatment the patient needs. Overall a successful transitional clinic! Can't wait to see how the 3rd years do this next year.
